In 1980, thanks to the reform and opening up policy, Wang Guangji, a graduate student in ophthalmology and optics, embarked on a journey as the first batch from Wenzhou Medical College to pursue a 2-year overseas fellowship at the Eye Research Institute of Retina Foundation, Harvard Medical School. The door to international exchange in our Hospital has since opened.

In May 1986, Professor Miao Tianrong introduced the “Logarithmic Vision Acuity Chart” and related research papers by Wenzhou Medical College from China to the global peers at the 25th International Ophthalmology Congress in Rome, Italy, which was highly obtained by the international ophthalmology community.

In 1988, thanks to the devoted preparatory work of Professors including Professor Qu Jia, Professor Wang Guangji and Professor Lu Fan, an innovative new discipline was born. In 1997, in the World Optometry Conference, at the request of the World Vision Society (WCO), Qu Jia, for the first time, proposed the Chinese name "OPTOMETRY" as "眼视光学" Yan (eyes) Shi(vision/optometry) Guang (optics) Xue (specialty)", which was defined as: a medical discipline that mainly deals with our eyes uniquely using optical remedies (such as laser, lenses, Synthetic lens), surgeries, drugs and other medical solutions so as to achieve the ultimate goal of vision improvement. This pioneering work has won worldwide acknowledgement and is called the “China Wenzhou Model”, which marks the official launch of the discipline OPTOMETRY in China.
