The Eye System of WMU, is a leading institute in the nation for education, medical care and Research of Ophthalmology & Optometry. The system serves as School of Ophthalmology & Optometry of WMU, The Eye Hospital of WMU, National Key Laboratory of Visual Science, National Optometry Research Center, and National Engineering Research Center of Ophthalmology & Optometry. It is the first educational base in China that have integrated the education of Ophthalmology and optometry in one discipline. This is highly praised as an advancing model in China’s eye care practice, while being highly recognized by the world’s eye care community.
The hospital provides excellent eye care to more than 700,000 patients annually at our medical centers in East China. Ranked as one of the top eye hospitals in China, we are also rated as the first in academic impact. Currently, there are over 1,200 students/residents in school. Additionally, the system serves as National Base for Continuing Medical Education (CME), and over 5000 ophthalmologists from all over China are trained annually. We regard the education of our outstanding medical students from across the country as one of the highest priorities to ensure that the vision needs of future generations are met.
Our graduates spread all over the country and have become leaders or core faculties in their institutions and national level academic associations.Our school also established the discipline of Biomedical Engineering (BME) since 1985, which is the first medical school in China to setup master’s degree program of BME. Now We are ranked as the 20th in China and has approved to be Provincial Key Discipline. We established a joint institute of Biomaterial & engineering with the Chinese of Academy of Science (CAS). We also setup joint educational and research programs with Northeastern University, Case Western Reserve University (U.S), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (Australia) and other top institutions in the world.
